Loyalty Program Tips and Tricks

Every major casino company runs a loyalty program, and the rules decide how quickly your play turns into free rooms, meals, and perks. Knowing the rules of the programs you use makes a big difference.

Points versus tier credits

Most programs track two separate numbers:

  • Points or reward credits are the currency you spend on hotel stays, food, and other rewards.
  • Tier credits determine your status level, which unlocks benefits like waived resort fees, priority lines, and better offers.

Spending points does not reduce your tier status. So spend your points freely while working toward the next tier.

The two biggest programs at a glance

Caesars Rewards has tiers of Gold, Platinum, Diamond (with higher Diamond levels), and invitation-only Seven Stars. Slots earn credits faster per dollar than video poker, and hotel, dining, and retail spending also earns credits. Tier credits reset each January 1, and reward credits can expire if your account has no earning activity for about six months.

MGM Rewards has tiers of Sapphire, Pearl, Gold, Platinum, and invitation-only Noir. Higher tiers bring perks such as free parking, waived resort fees when booking direct, and room upgrades.

Thresholds and benefits change often, so always check the current details on each program’s official website before planning a trip around them.

Tips for getting more value

  • Concentrate your play. Reaching a higher tier with one company is usually worth more than being a low-tier member of several.
  • Use non-gaming spend. Hotel stays, restaurant bills, and shopping often earn tier credits. Charge them to your room and make sure your card is attached.
  • Watch for multiplier days. Programs often run days when you earn double or more tier credits or points. If you’re visiting anyway, plan around them.
  • Consider a co-branded credit card. Several programs offer credit cards that grant status or tier credits. Use them only if you pay the balance in full each month.
  • Keep your account active. A small amount of activity every few months can keep points from expiring.
  • Look for status matches. Companies periodically match competitors’ status during promotional windows. A mid-level tier at one program can become a similar tier at another.
  • Check your offers before every trip. Log in to the program’s app or website, and ask the players club whether any offers are loaded on your account.

Keep the math honest

Loyalty perks are designed to encourage more play. They’re worth pursuing only with money you’d be gambling anyway. If you notice yourself chasing a tier or an offer, step back; no perk is worth more than the losses it takes to earn it.

Comps are a rebate on expected losses, not a reason to gamble more. Set a budget before you play and stick to it.
